Check out this chart from Hitwise's UK analyst Robin Goad. It shows how Twitter does a very good job in sending people to entertainment and news related websites....and a pretty bad job in sending people to online retailers.
Only 9.5% of Twitter traffic goes to "transactional sites", even less than the 14.7% from Facebook. To put that into perspective, Google UK sends over 30% of its traffic to transactional websites.
These figures aren't great news for pay per tweet services like Magpie. Though some retailers like Dell have bucked the trend in using Twitter to shift stock, they are the exception to the rule.
The Hitwise figures point to the majority of Tweeple simply not being in a 'buy' frame of mind when they use the service. At the same time, it's worth noting this survey from DEI Worldwide at the end of last year showing that Twitter can be fertile ground for personalised brand communications.
