The way you take your shopping trolley to the check out says a lot about you according to US research firm Relevation Research (reported in Ad Age). Three quarters of us (74%) pull our trolley into the line while the other quarter push.
The upshot is that a lot of supermarkets could be pitching their final impulse buys - those little items you see right at check out - all wrong, as a lot of shoppers don't notice them.
"The front of the store is a department, accounting for 1% of sales or more," said Nan Martin, Relevation co-founder. "It's designed for consumers to make impulse purchases as they push through. If you're pulling, your back is to the merchandise most of that time."
As a result, Supermarkets could do worse than have some shelves and items before checkout pointing the other way - ie towards the tills (yes, that leaves aside the problem of cluttering up the area before you pay, but hey, these supermarkets are smart, right?).
Pullers tend to be more aggressive and time impatient, which surprised me. I mean isn't shoving your cart into the person's backside in the line ahead of you a little aggressive? And according to Relevation Research, both the pusher and puller tribes are set in their ways and see 'positive attributes' with their way of doing things.
Something to look out for when doing your weekly groceries this weekend....
