Micromanaging is a pest both for managers and for employees, having to check up on every task, every activity takes an incredible amount of energy and leaves your employees feeling as though you don't trust them.
People are your most important asset. By working with other people you can make every minute you work worth 10 minutes of output.
You can supervise people who with different specialties and motivate them to produce incredible results, but you have to have the courage to let go.
Most people are motivated; they want to do something worthwhile, they want to produce good results. Management is about giving them a method to work after and then getting out of their way.
Delegation
Doing too much work yourself is a sure fire way to burn out.
Delegating tasks, outsourcing to others will save you time and in the long run money.
If you don't have to focus on the smaller details of your business or your life you can focus on the larger questions.
A company I have been working with a lot has a president who is so stressed that she has no chance to keep up with all her work. We were looking over her daily work schedule and we found that she had about 30 minutes/day to work on long term planning and creativity.
This is a horrible to a business when no one has time to consider the long term.
We have together been working on delegating tasks and outsourcing so that her employees get more to do and so that she can focus more on the larger issues.
The difference has been incredible; her employees are more motivated, work harder and are prouder of their jobs.
She has more time for creative work and long term planning which has made it possible for her to see opportunities that she otherwise had missed and made the company a lot of money.
Hire people you trust
Being able to delegate is all about trusting the people you have working for you, if you don't trust them you won't be able to hand over tasks to them.
It all starts with your employment, if you find quality people you should give them responsibility, give them a chance to grow, to improve, to learn and they will pay you back. They will produce and they will grow.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be."
