No matter how much we boast that we have 200 / 2000 / 20,000 etc Twitter followers, how many are realistically tuning into what we say? We might be relegated to the second or third columns on Tweetdeck, we might have a lot of followers that are spambots, and most might not even be on when we tweet.
Julian Cole over at AdSpace Pioneers has looked at all these factors and by using Twitter Analyzer figured out the proportion of followers who really are listening to you. The result? 10%, with the click through rate of any links being between 1-4%.
So to take myself as an example, I nominally have 2800 odd followers, but if I post a link to something realistically only 25-100 will click through...actually if I am being totally honest I think that's generous, the reality is on the lower end of that number
Still - as with so much online, raw numbers aren't everything. 25 are enough if one of them is an A-Lister and enough of their followers pass it on. And overall, as this chart shows, Twitter is second only to Facebook when it comes to sharing links.
