Literally every time I get into a conversation about the value of social media, there is always a non-believer that triumphantly proclaims that Facebook is dead and teens leaving. Facebook is old and lame...it's not "on fleek". Well guess what? The kind folks over at the Pew Research Center did a study that found that 71% of teens between the ages of 13 to 17 use Facebook. According to the Pew Research Center, the top social networks used by teens are:
- Facebook - 71%
- Instagram - 52%
- Snapchat - 41%
- Twitter - 33%
- Google+ - 33%
- Vine - 24%
- Tumblr - 14%
I know what you are thinking. Just because a majority of teens are using Facebook doesn't mean that they are more active there than other social channels. WRONG! According to the same study, a vast majority of teens use Facebook the most often. The following data sorts the percentages of all teens that use each social network the most often:
- Facebook - 41%
- Instagram - 20%
- Snapchat - 11%
- Twitter - 6%
- Google+ - 5%
- Tumblr - 3%
- Vine - 1%
- Other - 1%
If most teens are on Facebook and using it the most often, how on earth could it be dying? I would offer that with that kind of demographic usage, Facebook has a very bright future. One interesting insight from this data is that Twitter has become less of a powerhouse in comparison to the other social networks. Personally, I would have thought usage is higher among teens for Twitter. I guess you learn something new every day! Another very interesting insight from this study is that teens have diverse tastes when it comes to social media platforms. Only 22% of the demographic said that they only use one site. If teens are important to your brand, I recommend that you take note of their social usage and calibrate your strategy accordingly.
