My friend Pam Moore recently shared with all of us Green Eggs & Facebook: 15 Social Media Tips from Dr. Seuss, a simply terrific post and a highly recommended read.
Following her lead, I want to share some social media tips we can all glean from our favorite holiday songs.
After all this is the Most Wonderful Time of Year... at least for me it is. Surrounded by family and friends who are near and dear to me and all that jazz... Ok, sorry for the sarcasm, can't help it.
1. "I'll have a blue Christmas without you... I'll be so blue just thinking about you"
When in doubt listen to The King; there's a reason it's called "social" media; the point is to be to social and sociable. This goes for individuals and companies alike. Engage, interact, dare I say, socialize with us!
2. "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel."
Channeling my own Dr. Suess inspiration, this one's for all you nasty, wasty, mean, often faceless blog commenters. You know who you are. You live to spew venom just for the sake of it... You want to argue, disagree? That's fine. But do it in a professional manner.
3. "All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names."
As an add on to #2, don't be like "all the other reindeer" and call people names, be your own reindeer for crying out loud.
4. "Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose."
Speaking of Rudolph, dude had a red nose, shiny even. Was made fun of for being different. Yet in the end it was his being different that made all the difference. Moral: Be yourself. Be proud of who you are. Have your own voice, dont try and emulate someone else. One day your "foggy Christmas Eve will come" and guess who they're gonna call?
5. "Silent night, holy night."
The heck with being silent! Be loud. Be proud! Share your opinion, comment to your heart's desire... just remember sometimes it's a good idea to "sleep in heavenly peace" and let others do the talking and you do the listening.
6. "To face unafraid the plans that we've made"
You've set up accounts for Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and so on... Now you're not sure what to post, tweet, share, etc. Follow your instincts. Trust your gut. And never, ever fear your ideas. How could you? Their all yours and no one can ever take them away from you.
7. "Come they told me pa rum pum pum pum"
Ok, this one's incredibly cheesy but we are ALL our own Little Drummer Boy or Girl. And like the Little Drummer Boy we ALL have a gift to give the world. Do not let anyone ever tell you otherwise. Ever.
Like Pam, who shared her favorite Dr. Suess quote at the end of her post, I will share my all-time favorite line from a holiday song...
"Through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow."
Have a safe, wonderful, joyous, prosperous holiday season.
