Meta has launched a desktop version of its Edits video editing app, with Mac users now able to download the tool.

The desktop version of Edits gives users a lot more screen space to work with, which should make it easier to utilize its various creation options.
As explained by Brett Westervelt, head of Edits: “We built the desktop editor with creators in mind. It has everything you need to make great videos for any platform, free and customizable by you. Creators get Instagram’s licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, hundreds of sound and video effects, and unlimited automatic captions that support multiple languages.”
The expanded presentation format offers a full multi-track timeline, while having a larger display should help users make more precise edits.
“Splitting, cutting, and trimming are all easier, and color wheels, log conversions, and curves give your videos a finished grade,” Westervelt said. “If you have your own LUTs or font files, you can import them to tailor your Edits to your particular brand and style. For those who use agents in your editing workflows, you can also enable MCP in settings.”

Edits on desktop supports multiple aspect ratios, and offers 4K watermark-free exporting.
Launched in January 2025, Edits was primarily designed to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut app, which offers similar video editing tools but more usage limitations. At the time, there was speculation about ByteDance’s future in the U.S., and Instagram saw the opportunity to launch Edits as a replacement. The tool’s easy integration with Instagram was also positioned as a way to drive more interest in posting short-form content to the app.
As per the Nov. 5 release notes, Edits now has more than 50 million users, and has become a valuable complement for many creators due to its ever-evolving range of customization and creation features.
The desktop version could be its most significant update yet because the bigger layout makes it easier to access and action various options within the creation flow.
Westervelt said that any audio and text styles Edits users have saved on their mobile app will translate to the desktop version when they sign in. The company is also exploring cross-platform editing so users can keep working on projects in either app.
