So it appears that the emergence of Kenny Mayne and his full-tilt comedy moments is just the sign of things to come for ESPN. The "Worldwide Leader in Sports" seems to be looking to expand its online repertoire, and "Mayne Street" is just the beginning.
What once was offered as a free service to ESPN online readers, ESPN360 will soon become an "insider" only exclusive. That means for the meager sum of $39.95 a year, or $6.95 a month, you can be a part of such groundbreaking sports moments as Pakistan versus Hong Kong in the ever intense sport of cricket. That's right, you can watch all eight hours of that match! And it breaks down to less than 70 cents per minute! It costs more than that to raise a Sally Struthers sponsored child!
If cricket is not your game, you have such college basketball gems like Maine vs. Oklahoma, TCU vs. Indiana, and the Game of the Week, Florida Gulf Coast vs. Florida. Again, why are we not scrambling over ourselves for this? Personally, I might stick a s'more branch in my grandmother's eye just to catch North Carolina Central vs. Arkansas. On my computer no less, with bad steaming pauses!
Of course, the truly painful bite in the ass is that the majority of content offered on ESPN360 is shown on one of its many channels. Whether it be ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN classic, or ESPNU, the really important things to sports fans are available on one of these channels. Of course, not everyone has cable, so that is where the beauty of ESPN's streaming video came into play.
The truly sad thing about this mess is that ESPN will probably see a spike in its "Insider" subscription rate. That means more money in the Mouse's hand, that means more chances to catch Montana vs. James Madison in a college football classic (but you can pause the game at will, make some popcorn and perhaps a noose if Montana doesn't win), and perhaps see more of Johnny Depp as a pirate. In the meantime, go Savannah State!
