Aussie blogger and Age of Conversation co-editor Gavin Heaton is trying something new. This morning, he announced a competition to find your best social media marketing idea. Dubbed "So You Think You Can Market," the premise is simple -- visit Gavin's blog to get the brief (in this case, he's looking to help a popular women's fashion blog attract male readers in advance of the coming holiday shopping season), submit your idea and then Gavin's community will put the ideas through he ringer and, through a series of elimination rounds, select the best of the bunch. The winner gets to work with the client to bring the winning idea to life.
While this isn't the first attempt to crowdsource creativity or tap into the collective (and substantial) wisdom of the marketing blogger community, it is a great vehicle for frustrated agency or client-side marketers who can't seem to muster enough support to bring their ideas to market. In my experience, this is more common then you might think (I can't count the number of times my attempts to rally even my smartest colleagues and clients to do something groundbreaking in social media were met by blank stares.) In Gavin's own words:
"We all think that we are capable of coming up with a ground-breaking idea. We all think that we could, if given the chance, deliver a brilliant social media campaign that creates buzz, drives sales and makes our clients deliriously happy.
But do your clients bite?
Do your ideas fall on deaf ears?
This competition could be the opportunity you have been waiting for!"
In other words, it's a chance to put your money where your mouth is. This isn't just about what you would do -- it's about what you will do (if you win, of course.) It's an opportunity to put your great ideas into practice and see how they work. So what are you waiting for? Get the complete scoop at Gavin's blog -- entries are due by October 31 and voting begins on November 1.
