Instagram has published an updated guide to creating effective Reels, including notes on creative options, advanced editing features and distribution opportunities.
The updated guide is part of the platform’s “Tips and Tricks” series, which aims to provide more insight into how the various functions of the platform work, in order to invite more people to try them out.
And while many of the notes are aimed at a more general audience, as opposed to providing advanced creation pointers, there are some potentially valuable notes contained within this latest overview.
First, the guide explains the Reels creation process, and where Reels fit in the broader IG ecosystem.
As per Instagram: “Whether you're stitching together clips from a weekend trip, syncing a transition to a trending sound or showing off a recipe in 30 seconds flat, Instagram Reels is the place to do it.”
Instagram explained that Reels can be anywhere from 3 seconds to 3 minutes long, with each offering different value:
- 3 to 15 seconds: Great for quick transitions, trends and punchy one-liners.
- 15 to 60 seconds: The sweet spot for tutorials, day-in-my-life clips and most creative formats.
- 60 seconds to 3 minutes: Best for longer storytelling, walkthroughs or detailed how-tos.
Users can also create Reels from still images, by uploading multiple photos which will then play as a slideshow within the Reels feed.
The guide also looks at the value of text overlays, and how creators can use these additions to highlight a specific detail, or create a hook that stops someone mid-scroll.

Instagram also notes that captions can play an important role in improving accessibility, and should also be included even if the creator has already added text overlays.
“Text overlays highlight key moments you choose, while captions make your entire spoken audio visible. The two features work well together and serve different purposes,” Instagram said.
There’s also a section on editing controls, which highlights some of the key creation features, including playback speed options, video timer to record hands-free and alignment tools to facilitate smoother transitions.
Finally, Instagram shared some notes on Reels distribution, and how Reels clips can drive more engagement.
“Reels that perform well can appear on the Explore page, where millions of people discover new accounts and videos every day. This is one of the biggest differences between Reels and Stories. Reels are built for reach beyond your existing followers. To give your reel the best chance of being recommended, keep it high-quality, original and engaging from the first second.”
Overall, there’s no new information, as such, within this updated guide, but it does still provide a refresher on the key Reels elements, and some of the more recent additions to the creation process.
Reels is now the most engaging surface in the app, with Reels consumption making up more than 50% of all user time spent on IG.
