Before I wrote a post on the new Facebook lists, I was giving them some time to marinate. I wanted to take them for a trial run before I jumped to conclusions that it was another horrible update on the Facebook Wall of Shame, as many other Facebook users have done.
After testing them out for the past week, here are my findings:
The Smart Lists are, in fact, smart
These lists that Facebook automatically creates to get you started are for general commonalities between you and your friends, such as college information, work and city. This is a basic breakdown, and it actually does make it easier to start creating your lists.
The suggestion of friends to add to your lists is also helpful. With as many friends as most of us have on Facebook now, you tend to forget people (Sorry. It's true!). This feature helps build your lists quickly.
Sharing info with select groups is easier
If you have a link you only want to share with your coworkers, you can! This helps unclog your main newsfeed a little bit, which is a complaint Facebook users have had since the beginning. But for me, I post information I want all my friends to see, so this feature isn't too useful. I can see how it would be for others though.
I won't use this just like I don't use Google+
While Facebook felt they were listening to users' feedback with this improvement, the improved Friends lists are simply another update that sits, unused, on my profile. When will I find this feature useful? When I can use it to target messages to the Likes on the fan pages I manage for work.
