This week I moderated another Social Media Today webinar as part of their Best Thinker webinar series, this time on the topic of Protecting Your Brand: Privacy, Risk and Compliance. This webinar was sponsored by Tracx and featured Phil Mennie (@philmennie) is the author of "Social Media Risk and Governance: Managing Enterprise Risk" and he is PwC's Social Media Risk and Governance leader, Joanna Belbey (@belbey) the Social Media and Compliance Specialist for Actiance, and Eric Berkowitz (@tracx) is VP Solutions Engineering at Tracx. We discussed the risks in social media which we so often ignore.
Here are three of the key takeaways:
- Security and Social Networks - People these days are fairly well educated on the dangers of phishing emails but the bad guys out there understand that in these new channels of communication you are far more receptive to open or click on something from a friend.
- Compliance and Social Networks - There are more than 10,000 rules and regulations that govern electronic communications in the US alone. A customer who tweets, calls the call center and emails your company could make for a long and difficult electronic discovery period if there is an issue.
- Train your teams on Risk, Security and Compliance - You will need evidence that employees have been trained. Ask them to "attest" or sign off that they have read and understand your internal social media policies and finally better yet run reports that demonstrate your firm have supervised or reviewed a pre-set percentage of these activities.
