Have you ever seen an experiment that simulates a nuclear chain reaction? There is a popular one that uses ping pong balls and mousetraps (see below). I have always been fascinated by this concept and have found that it relates to much more than nuclear fission. Let me explain.
As it relates to business, I am of the belief that there is an energy, a "force" if you will, that is both positive and negative, which can be transmitted throughout an organization, among its clients and by its partners. It is clear how positive energy can be communicated directly, though good customer service, great products, happy clients and profitable partners. Conversely negative energy can be distributed in the same way though bad customer experience and frustrated partners, etc. But I believe the real charm is in the passive or involuntary transmission of this energy. Like the experiment in this YouTube video, the success or failure of your business can happen all of the sudden and without any doing on your part.
I tried to explain this concept to a few people the other day. Often when I try to reconcile the rigidity of traditional corporate philosophy and the supple side of progressive thought, I get a few cocked heads and puzzled stares. But I think I made some sense and someone suggested the idea Corporate Karma and it stuck with me. The point is; the energy that is created in and around of your organization can cause a chain reaction six degrees away. That can be a powerful tool if you leverage it; or it can sink your business before you even know it.
