Everybody likes to have something new even if it really isn't new. The Swap-O-Matic vending machine created by Lina Fenequito contains several items of sentimental value (handwritten poetry or artwork) to the hilarious (a jar of Miracle Whip). The machine works on a credit system where users can either donate, receive or swap for credit. Simply punch in an email address and with every donation a credit is earned that can later be used to acquire an item from the vending machine.
Currently, Fenequito and her team of designers are developing a machine that interacts with social media technology and hope to debut in the fall. What are the possibilities for the Swap-O-Matic that could possible benefit from the social media front?
My guess is that the vending machine could offer an available inventory that is accessible on a social media platform. A digital scavenger hunt could commence leading people to donate a specific item to get a treasured item that can only be found in a Swap-O-Matic near them. Facebook ads could promote donation drives or recycling programs. The Swap-O-Matic features could surprise donators who frequent the machine with gifts for their generosity. The more you donate the more you win.
The Swap-O-Matic is an interesting concept that could encourage a larger volume of recycling and reusing that our current system seems to neglect. If recycling can platform itself within the social media universe, perhaps there is a chance for a less wasteful society. If only I could exchange this bologna sandwich for that Turkey Club at the office.
