This week I moderated another Social Media Today webinar as part of their Best Thinker webinar series: Transforming Data Noise Into Data Intelligence. This webinar was sponsored by Clarabridge and featured Mason Nelder (@MasonNelder), Director of Verizon Central Insights & Social Business at Verizon Communications, and Brendon O'Donovan (@BrendonODonovan), Senior Product Marketing Manager at Clarabridge. We discussed how to develop a framework to understand big data and how to create a data strategy that gives you a competitive edge!
Here are three of the key takeaways:
- Context is key when looking at emotion and sentiment - the example of "I like Apples but hate Blackberries" could mean two completely different things. Without the context of this tweet it would be hard to know if the speaker means fruit or phones!
- Get all your unstructured and structured data in the same place - Sounds like that should be easy to do but getting them fields to match up and into one database can be a challenge; a phased approach was recommended to make sure you are getting it right.
- What to do about pesky outlier data - This is not a new problem in data analysis. The question is how do you handle outliers and can rules be created to identify them.
