As expected when it released its US figures earlier this month, Comscore's latest stats show thatTwitter continues its march forward with an estimated 20 million users worldwide.
According to TechCrunch, if Twitter can keep this up then it should be at 50 million odd users by the Summer, after which point it would well and truly no longer be 'niche.'
On a similar note, we have Hitwise showing that in Australia, Twitter grew by a staggering 3220% year on year.
Those numbers aren't to everyone's satisfaction with a fair amount of bleating going on about Oprah and her cohorts coming on board. To which there are two responses.
First of all from advertising pundit and blogger Alan Wolk:
"Seriously people: what were you thinking? That Twitter was going to become home to 250 million social media experts, all of whom were on there to "add value" "build a personal brand" "contribute to the conversation" "provide useful links" and otherwise "give back to the community."" Indeed.
Secondly from academic and social media consultant Joanne Jacobs: "If you are concerned about the quality of information streams you are receiving via twitter, you should simply "change your friends". Because twitter isn't about sustaining an existing network in the way of MySpace or Facebook, twitter enables following based entirely on your own choices."
So, if you don't want to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi, you don't have to. The whole point of Twitter, and one of the reasons why it's grown, is that you select who you want to hang out with.
