OK, so two things. First, Zuckerberg and co seem to be on a one way mission to annoy people. There are seemingly endless tweaks being made to Facebook at present and it feels like every time I login there's something different or something new. Now I'm not against change - I love progress! I love it when something is added or altered in a social network (or anything else for that matter) that enhances its functionality or usefulness or efficiency or results. But is it really necessary, for example, to alter the font size of our newsfeeds in Facebook so that, sure we can see more items, but we need a microscope to read them?
This isn't progress, it's tinkering. A few years back, Chelsea FC had a manager called Claudio Ranieri who became known as 'the tinkerer'. He couldn't let a single game pass without tweaking his formation, or making substitutions to alter his players or his strategy; it drove the fans nuts. And Facebook's constant tweaks are starting to drive me nuts. So many are pointless or plain annoying. I'd rather Zuckerberg (and I know it's him personally doing this...) saved them all up and implemented a full site update every three months than constantly changed things. Seriously I would.
And second, Facebook has just removed the ability to customise tabs on personal profiles. Without telling anyone. One day my profile has tabs that display by blog posts, my Twitter feed and my LinkedIn page, the next it has the standard photos/video/notes tabs. All the time I spent thinking about what I wanted to tell people and how, gone. I appreciate that the vast, vast majority of people don't do this on their profiles and couldn't care less, but I also know I'm not alone in being a tad hacked off. Renowned social media hero Danny Brown wrote on his Wall: "What the heck happened to my optimized profile (blog, Slideshare tab, etc)?"
So even though this is like shouting in a wind tunnel, a plea to Facebook: stop tinkering and give me back my profile options! I AM NOT A NUMBER!
Rant over. If you've read this far, I'd really, really appreciate it if you'd take 30 seconds just to answer one quick question about your Facebook usage, below. (Results announced in a blog post soon.) Thanks muchly.
