Social Media Updates: Page 413

  • Facebook, Twitter, You Name It. Social Media is "Happening" to your Brand - Whether You Like It or Not.

About a year ago I met with a luxury watch manufacturer that I love. I say I" love" them because I own one of their watches, and it holds huge sentimental value for me. I approached the company with the idea that if I could speak to the decision makers I would most certainly convince them that ...

  • Think Twitter Has No Rules? Think Again

Twitter has no rules. That's what I keep hearing from people who think they are the vanguard of a new movement. Don't believe it. There are rules EVERYWHERE.

  • Facebook's Q&A Initiative: Desperation?

In an article written earlier, The Coming Social Media Crash: Similarities With the dotcom bust #2, I mentioned that one of the indicators (viewed in the rear view mirror) of business failure during the dot.com boom/must cycle in 1999-2000 was that companies changed their business models significantly once they realized that the hype and hope was...well, just that.

  • Why we follow brands on Facebook and Twitter

In April this year, I conducted the fifth annual survey of Swedish bloggers and blog readers. The survey called BlogSweden 5, included a total of 2,251 respondents, out of which 94% had at least one blog. One of the new questions this year was about why people choose to follow brands on Twitter and become a fan, or like, brands on Facebook.

A Facebook fan page can be one of, if not the most important extension of your brand in the social media ecosystem. Facebook now has over 500 million people using it's service. The reality of that number means that Facebook has created it's own Internet within in the Internet. Some people log ...

  • Twitter's Fundamental Change for the Worse

Twitter plans to introduce media into the Tweet Stream. This is the worst idea in the history of Twitter. For now, let's ignore the fail whale problem. Even though we know the server load will only increase exponentially as the stream has to distribute hundreds of images and videos along with text, let's ignore this for the greater issue at hand.

  • Do You Use LinkedIn to Follow Potential Employers?

Most jobseekers think of LinkedIn as a tool to network with individuals. While LinkedIn is certainly useful for this purpose, it can also provide invaluable information about companies you want to target during your job search.

  • Twitter - New Media, or News Media?

On, July 22nd a strong summer storm dropped over 7 1/2 inches of rain on parts of Southeastern Wisconsin in a two hour period. The coverage of the effects of that storm went wall-to-wall all night with live on-scene reports of flooded basements, cars being carried away by water on roads that...

  • Twitter In A Corner - Facing Huge Challenges

It's easy to consider Twitter a success, particularly if you don't look at it as a business, but it's facing some critical issues and Catch-22's that may endanger its existence over the next 12 months. The fact that it has not turned a profit yet, and the business need to start providing return on investment for its investors, puts it in an awkward position. It's a position that other platforms will also face or are now facing.

  • Why Do You Retweet?

A friend passed a URL along to me this week with a research piece done by a Microsoft team last year on the science of retweeting. The trio of authors, Danah Boyd, Scott Golder and Gilad Lotan looked at 720,000 tweets over a six-month period and found that only 3% of the tweets "are likely to be ...

A retweet on Twitter is a simple, but powerful ways to take your content that you're sharing with current followers and potentially making it viral. • 500 Million Facebook Users Later and Where Are We?

Facebook passed 500 million members yesterday. The number is great for them, and it's mind-boggling how they keep the site running smoothly with all the traffic they receive (Twitter, take note). The number comes as a laurel in the middle of another year filled with controversy.

  • Quit Betting on Twitter

There was a ComputerWorld post that talked about the issues with Twitter's downtime recently. A few companies who have dedicated clients and features that are dependent upon Twitter are whining about the downtime. Sorry folks, no empathy here. You built an entire company upon another free service that is a single point of failure for your clients? And you want me to feel sorry for you? (Insert time-out buzzer sound here)

  • The Twitter - Facebook Disparity

Last night, I attended a minor league (AA) baseball game in North Carolina (where I live) and was struck by how active the team was on various social media platforms. Before the game even started, they were showing pictures of the "Facebook Fan Of The Game" from their fan page, which I later learned had well over 3,000 members - not too shabby! I was also struck by the number of times the PA announcer asked fans to "join the team's Facebook Fan Page and follow us on Twitter" for news, discounts and special promotions.

  • LinkedIn Groups have a new look!

This month LinkedIn is revamping the Groups section of their site. You may already be a member of a group on LinkedIn, but if not, I would highly encourage it. More than likely, there are groups about your industry or a specific topic that is of interest to you. LinkedIn's groups have always been a great way to portray your expertise in a particular area or stay up to date on news topics, but with this recent update I imagine that they will become even more helpful.
