Four Elements and myself take pride in writing high quality original blog posts. However, once in a blue moon I like to share and comment on another bloggers post. Tonight is a once in a blue moon type of night and Matt McGee is the man of the post. Matt blogs at SmallBusinessSEM.com where I found the above image.
I suggest you right click on the image, click "view image", print it out and pin it up on your desk or wall. Matt's pyramid correctly positions every necessary step in successful search engine optimization. Before you start the optimization process, make sure you have studied each block.
While every block in the pyramid is vital to the overall SEO success, the bottom and top rows are the most important. Your site has no chance of success if you are not committed, educated and organized. Most clients I deal with expect their site to rank higher instantly, which couldn't be further from the truth. Successful search engine optimization takes a great deal of patience and persistence. You must come into the process with the correct mindset and preparation. The first step in being educated and prepared is to set your Google Alert to words/phrases, such as "search engine marketing" or "SEO".
I only have one piece to add to Matt's pyramid, which is the issue of simultaneously catering to spyders and visitors. Both have considerably different wants from your site, which can become an SEO nightmare. You need to find the proper balance between aesthetics/design/UI and keyword cramming/over focus on backend optimization. My next few posts will focus on this issue and hopefully help you find the perfect balance.
Matt McGee explains each step in his SEO Success Pyramid here.
