Yes, ladies and gentleman, a robot using social networks whilst in a rocket in the depths of space... This is a story which sounds like it should be the plot to a old black and white Hollywood movie, but it's 100% true! A robot, named R2, has tweeted whilst out amongst the stars. Now we've heard it all. R2 was created by the NASA space co-operation to help aid his human counterparts in and around the space station with daily tasks. The tinman tweet read:
Those electrons feel GOOD! One small step for man, one giant leap for tinman kind,"
R2 has his very own Twitter account which you can find and follow yourself to ensure you keep up with all his news: @astrorobonaut (http://twitter.com/AstroRobonaut) In fact, 40,000 people are already following him! That's not a number to laugh at when you consider that not even some high profile humans can reach that follower status so quickly. The tweets themselves do indeed come from R2 as he has been hardwired to interact on Twitter. In fact, he can even respond to tweets and wish people Happy Birthday. What a delightfully well mannered chap he is!
It's stories like this which make you wonder if those old myths about technology taking over will in fact happen. I'm just saying, we've all seen A.I. and iRobot...! The idea of a robot being on a space mission and using the internet would have made my grand parents laugh it sounds like such a ridiculous story. But there you go, we live in the future that the old classic movies aspired to.
Personally, I find robots, even humans acting like robots, scary and now they can interact with us using technology when they are technology themselves. It makes your head hurt. However, the fact he can tweet is probably a good thing. After all, tweeting is social, it helps you report your news and life to your friends and other interested parties. Useful if you are never returning to Earth to share these stories in person/robot, which unfortunately, R2 is not planning on doing, "There are no plans to return R2 to Earth," said Nasa." Twitter, keeping you connected across galaxies and species.
