Twitter Bios Show Exponential Increase - to 181,000 - Self-proclaimed Social Media Gurus
As a public service, What's Next Blog periodically reports on the number of self-proclaimed social media gurus, ninjas, masters and mavens on Twitter.
The January 2013 What's Next Blog social media guru Twitter Bio list (researched on FollowerWonk) has grown to epic proportions. The list now tops 181,000 - up from a mere 16,000 when we first started tracking them in 2009.
Today, there are even 174 people who describe themselves as "social media whores" in their Twitter bios. (We couldn't make that sort of thing up.)
Twitter bios allow a mere 140 characters, plus a URL. Therefore, one most boil one's bio down to what one thinks represents one's most essential facts.
While the self-appointed guru titles have evolved slightly, one thing has not change one bit: guru is still something someone else calls you.
The fact is: there are only a handful of social media experts on the planet whom others are likely to call gurus. Those who actually have the goods:
• bring actual experience - not just observations and theories - to the table;
• sell solutions, not formulas;
• don't promise that social media will provide a quick fix for your bottom line.
One thing seems certain: at this rate, everyone on Twitter will soon be a social media guru.
