Most of us have used social media to promote or publicize our name or brand. That in itself, is not a bad thing. However, when social media is used egotistically to shamelessly promote, it can be more hurtful than helpful.
Here are some guidelines to keep your social media ego in check. The first five guidelines are from a great Forbes article I'd encourage you to read on this very topic, which I have slightly paraphrased and shortened. I've added two of my own that I think are highly important when it comes to social media. Keep in mind that the adage "Be the type of friend you'd like to have," applies when it comes to social media.
1. Honor honesty: Tell the truth. A simple guideline, but it's often overlooked. A little exaggeration can lead to serious consequences, so don't risk compromising your integrity.
2. Don't boast: When you add to a conversation online, make sure it is relevant to the conversation rather than being relevant to you alone. You'll turn people away by being self-serving.
3. Stay in the moment: When you're interacting with people offline, BE PRESENT. Creating a positive image goes beyond digital, so put your smartphone aside when you have the chance to engage with people face-to-face.
4. Nix negativity: Never criticize ideas and people. Skip the negativity and don't overdue the sarcasm. Negativity only attracts complainers.
5. Be consistent: Make sure you're clear on your core beliefs and target audience, and then be intentional in your tone and content.
6. Give credit: If you didn't write the content, credit the true author. If you didn't come up with the idea, praise the person who did. Say thank you when appropriate. Giving credit to others online is important!
7. Offer value: Wise social media users care about others more than themselves. Seek to offer your audience a benefit rather than seek to benefit yourself.
Any other guidelines you would add based on your experience with social media? Please share!
