I wrote about Facebook taking over the world last week, when they made the platform announcement at their f8 conference. You know this kind of technology is becoming a real cultural phenomenon when you start to see references to it in places you wouldn't expect. I opened my July copy of Empire magazine (which happens to be celebrating 30 years of Star Wars) and looked at the News Etc. section where they always list the top 5-10 things on their mind - generally upcoming films, who should play what role, and other film production gossip. Number 4 in the list was Facebook. (Elsewhere in the magazine I also discovered there is a female Star Wars fan group who hang out at leiasmetalbikini.com - a whole different area I don't want to get in to right now - wonder if they have a group on Facebook? )
One of the most powerful things about Facebook is the News Feed, where you can track what your friends are doing. You can see who they are connecting with, what Facebook applications they are downloading and trying out, or what groups they are joining. By the way, an application's page will have reviews and comments to help you work out if it is any good. Looking over Dennis's shoulder like this I found there is an OpenCoffee group and a Social Networks group. Anshu led me to the Web 2.0 (Entrepreneurs) group. No wonder the adoption is so rapid. Clearly, the force is strong with this one.
