Customization of your Twitter page has been limited to an avatar and a background picture until now. The new profile options allow adding a custom header that will appear on the web page and mobile apps.
After reading the announcement on the Twitter blog and checking out the examples provided, I resized and uploaded a gear background for the header. It was okay but I wanted to combine the avatar and the background into one image like this:
The process was easier than I had imagined.
- Make the background of the avatar transparent.
- Place it on the gear background image in the same position that Twitter uses. (This required a little trial and error tweaking.)
- Remove the extra background.
- Upload the new avatar image. Shift it as needed by dragging the image on the screen.
The specifics and some tips:
- Background image size: 1252 x 626 pixels
- Avatar image size: 200 x 200 pixels
- To upload background for header:
Login to Twitter
Go to Settings >> Design >> Change Header - To upload new avatar:
Login to Twitter
Go to Settings >> Profile >> Change Photo - The sizes used worked for my header but they may vary with different images. I played with a few sizes and found that they upload differently.
- Have fun with your images but keep them consistent with your brand.
- Make sure that the avatar works in the header and as a standalone image. It appears next to all tweets.
- The text on the header comes from the name, location, website and bio entered into your profile.
