There is unlikely to be no mobile app untouched or tablet unturned as every one hundredth of a second of the Olympics are tracked, updated, tweeted and shared until the finishing tape of the closing ceremony is reached on August 12th.
London 2012 is likely to be the most social media shared and networked event the world has yet seen. And the most powerful assertion yet of how the multichannel digital platforms of search and social technology rule twenty first century communications.
Obviously, for eCommerce and every other organisation online, it will likely be business as usual, even as trending Olympics chatter arcs across the Twittersphere or Facebook updates sometimes go into overdrive.
There are already countless mobile apps to instantly receive every type of Olympics info and data you can think of, from real-time news, latest scores, medal counts to new Olympic or World record times. But what may not be so well-known are the numerous apps available for the ordinary man or woman to either navigate around or connect with a greater Olympics experience, and at a local level community level too.
Some are a tangible demonstration of how some apps are also tapping into social marketing strategies by reaching out and engaging community audiences wherever they are located. Business owners would do well to take note of how SoLoMo (social, local, mobile) is becoming crucial to visibility, awareness and online marketing in today's smartphone user dominated world.
While the 2012 Summer Games London Offline app (does not require 3G) provides a "self-contained database full of venue info, schedules, times, dates and maps", there is also an official London 2012 android app. Called "Join-In", it will not only provide a huge amount of information about community events taking place around the Olympics themselves but also offer key opportunities for social and sport interaction where any user is located.
As an example of 'online-offline' linking, the app user can opt-in to receive notifications on any type of event or sports they're interested in which, along with the locations, can be bookmarked with images of previous events, too.
Even the many nightmare scenarios that can occur just getting around the capital can be addressed by apps, which can advise alternative routes during rush hour periods or at times of heavy road congestion. The "health and environmental benefits" of walking, cycling or other route options are also highlighted, along with redeemable reward incentives, and users can also share alternative directions with their social network.
As the time honoured tradition of 'ringing the bells' to send a signal around the country at 20:12 on the morning of the day that the Games of the XXX Olympiad begins, it will be search and social media networking that will continue to send the message far and wide.
