Times have changed. Today 100 people showed up at 8 am in downtown LA for the workshop with Brian Solis.
PRSA LA president, Rita Tateel, said it just goes to show that when you have the right topic with the right speaker, they will come. I have to add - at the right time. Two years ago when PRSA LA offered their first social media workshop it was cancelled because they got so few responses.
The attendees today were very interested in how social media is affecting the practice of media relations and PR.
And Brian's message was that it's not about the tools, it's about the engagement. Social media is all about the public and relationships
Although social media is affecting all parts of the organization there are some that fall squarely in the PR field - reputation management, socializing news content and making relationships with bloggers.
A social media newsroom with RSS Feeds is a great place to start.
Listening to and monitoring online conversations for mention of the company is essential.
- Who is saying it
- Where are they talking
- How are they finding and sharing info
- What is being said
There are several tools that can be used to tap into these conversations - RSS Feeds, Google alerts, Google blog search, Technorati and Tweetscan (for Twitter posts)
