People get paid to do a job, perform a service or sell a product. In the virtual world many are chasing opportunities to get paid but unless there is a market for what you do the only payment you'll get is a "hit" or a click-through which earns "cents".
Others may tell you it's about being seen and leveraging your position and relations within the web to eventually create a transaction or exchange for value delivered. Some will say it is about being "connected" with people and determining what value you can give to get.
Others will tell you the web is about leveraging "free" for gain which comes from free. But people can't buy groceries or gas for free so you are left with a paradox of the moment; "How you earn a living on the free web?"
Not Only How but When
The more people I talk to and the more research I do, an old consistent theme stands out. "People don't resist change they resist being changed." The updated version for the social web is "People don't resist change they want it".
When I think about all the social networking platforms out there several issues show up as "the blinding flash of the obvious" in terms of what should change for us to save time, be more productive and possibly earn a living. Here are a few:
- My place on the web should be one place that I control and manage everything, anything and everyone I am associated with.
- What I do with my place is leverage what and who I know for mutual gain including economics.
- My place should save me time, enable me to effectively perform services or to produce something of value for businesses, my contacts, the market or the company you may be working for now
- You should get paid for whatever value added service or product you produce for a market willing and interested in what you do.
- You, united with others, may actually create things that enhance or replace existing things or processes with greater value. Doing so would mean someone or some business will pay you to create those things.
To accomplish these aims media, technology, businesses and users will need to converge together with each contributing to a new systemic eco-system that opens existing markets and creates new ones. This movement is just now beginning to show signs of life and given the pace of change the movement may come to reality at the blink of an eye. Watch the markets, the leaders and those who would benefit most from accelerating the movement and there, on the fringes, you'll see a dim light on the horizon preparing to shine bright.
Those that lead such a movement may or may not exist today but the pieces required are all there waiting to be "connected", mobile, internet, broadcast and the collective creativity of the few already leading. The timing is ripe, the market is there for the taking and the users will rush to the promise of opportunity that leapfrogs today's "system.
The Relationship Economy will be born once a leader releases technology and a vision that leapfrogs ahead of today's paradigms of networking platforms. It will be fantastic or just maybe Comcastic if you know what I mean.
What say you?
