If you were raised in America, that means you were exposed to the basic premise of the American Dream which is that in America anything is possible. If you are willing to work hard enough you can be whatever you want to be.
Social media is one way that has given new life and inspiration to this concept. For years kids who grew up with certain dreams hit many barriers to achieving their goals. Some were able to push through and others gave up and went a different direction.
With the introduction of social media many of these barriers are knocked down. For example if you wanted to be a writer you might need an agent or a publisher, now you can have your own blog. This gives you a platform to write everything from your thoughts to a novel. If you want to be a musician then start posting your videos on Youtube or on your Facebook page.
If you gain a large enough following and develop your own personal brand, you can either get the attention of publishers or record labels or you can forget both of them and publish yourself then sell directly to your audience.
Even Linkedin is a social option that can help you get the career of your dreams. With the right connections, you can hear about jobs before they are posted or use your people to get you in for an interview or provide a recommendation.
So don't be so quick to give up on those childhood dreams-- you might be able to use social media to make them a reality.
