I'm doing some work right now on a website that's never been indexed by any of the search engines. Ever! Or so it would seem as nothing came up in the search results when I typed in the exact URL.
Actually, nothing came up when I did a search just for the name of my client either. So, the first thing we did was put up a profile on LinkedIn - something simple with her name, business description and a link to her website.
Google loves LinkedIn and almost immediately her name came up #1 in a search. Now, this isn't a direct link to her website but until we can add meta tags onto her website and work on her content, we at least have something that shows up in a search.
Mind you, without knowing her business name (which is the same as her name), you still would be hard pressed to find her but we are starting from relative scratch here. And since it indexes so quickly we don't have to wait around for 4-6 weeks for the bots to pass by.
I hear time and again that LinkedIn is only a resume site which may have been true a few years ago but now it's a great resource for your business. They have business profile pages where you can list your products and services, specialties, have a map showing your location and you can promote your company online.
I know when I'm searching for information about a specific company its one of the first places I go to gather information. You can tell a lot about a business just by its profile - you can tell if you want to do business with them or whether to pass and keep looking.
So, if you are a new company and don't have a strong online presence, throw up a profile on LinkedIn and get socially comfortable online.
