I've been thinking a lot about creativity recently, not in a 21st Century kind of skills way, but in an inbound marketing content way.
Let me digress for a moment - inbound marketing works but there are a few facts that need be reinforced if you embark on using inbound marketing at your school:
- Inbound marketing is not a magic bullet. It will help you market your school but it's hard work.
- Inbound marketing takes time. It's effects won't, and don't, happen overnight.
- Inbound marketing is like a machine that demands fuel and that fuel is content.
Point #3 gets me back to my thoughts about creativity. At Sewickley Academy we create a lot of content to fuel our inbound marketing and social media marketing efforts and I spend quite a bit of time thinking about blog posts, posts on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and YouTube.
As I've gotten older I've determined a few things that help me to be more creative:
- Implementing the Getting Things Done (GTD) System has helped to clear my mind and focus on the task at hand.
- Paying attention to the fact that I need proper rest. I can't burn the candle at both ends anymore. I've also accepted the fact that I get too tired at night to "think" so I try to do my creative work and content creation in the morning.
- Deadlines work! I've come to understand that deadlines help me to finish work and deliver.
What tips, tricks, or ideas do you have to be creative and create content?
I would love for you to share your ideas and thoughts in this thread in the forum.
Hope you have a great weekend!

5 Quick Tips for Using Periscope, Twitter's New Live Video Streaming App
In the last month or so, there's been a big surge in live video broadcasting. Thanks to smartphone apps like Periscope, users can record live video streams and share them with their network. For example, a friend of mine recently used Periscope to livestream an iPhone video of her walking her dog. She shared a link to the live stream on Twitter, and a few of her followers clicked through and watched her walk her dog in real time. Kind of weird, but at the same time, kind of cool.
