I am going to start this post with some questions.
Do you own an iPhone or BlackBerry?
How many mobile applications have you downloaded this year?
Is your cell phone at your side 24/7?
Do you feel slightly lost and worried if you forget your cell phone at home?
Do you find yourself checking your cell phone constantly, even if you haven't received a new text, email or call in hours?
Do you see more and more people with their cell phones on the table at restaurants?
Have you noticed more kids in elementary school with cell phones?
We are a mobile generation that is obsessed with our smart phones. The current generation of cell phones has become incredibly compact offices. A young professional can check their email, attend a WebEx meeting, read their favorite blogs/newspapers/magazines, update their blog, view bank statements and update their Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter/YouTube. People are spending a substantial amount of time on their phones and this amount of time will increase in the coming years.
The mobile generation has created a massive opportunity for companies looking to build brand recognition and at the same time, become innovative. Start-ups and Fortune 500 companies need to plan an entry into the mobile market. Launching a unique mobile application is a great idea for young companies with a low marketing budget.
Four Elements just launched our first mobile application/tool, which you can see at the top of this post. We used a company called MoFuse to build a mobile website for our blog. Our mobile site is optimized for cell phone browsers and screens. This application is about as simple as you can get, but it is a step in the right direction and shows our readers that we are thinking about the mobile environment.
I suggest you organize a team meeting and begin to brainstorm your entry into the mobile era.
