Everywhere I go, the issue is the same. Institutions, health-care, education, business, food and agriculture and government no longer serve the people they are meant to but serve only themselves.
I spent Friday at Quantico, the home of the thinking of the USMC, where I attended a conference on the condition of the US armed forces, on warfare itself and how the ideas of the late Col John Boyd could help.
An outcome of the conference is that it is abundantly clear that the system that is the military is also only interested in itself - in careerism, in procurement and in the preservation of the status quo of how things are done and organized.
Next year's conference will be about Trust.
The US military has many brilliant thinkers who know what is best and what to do - none make it more than Colonel or get it after they have retired. Some have books published but these are read only by the choir. We have the ideas. We have the evidence. We even have some support at the top - BUT the immune system of these institutions and power of their lobby support is so great that there is no progress
I am beginning to think that this is the context for Social Media. Social Media's power is that it can get through the immune system of these powerful institutions as the printing press got through the walls of the Universal church 500 years ago.
Now - the policy debates in all areas are either behind closed doors, angry outburst by activists or secret martyrdoms by people inside the system who cannot keep their mouths shut. So long as our voice uses conventional channels, the system can keep the lid on. Vast resources from vested interest are available to mute the voice of dissent.
What if we used Social Media to get the word out to the public at large? There is not enough power inside - we have to get the support of the public. Look at how Sicko will help shift the health-care agenda!
If the American public knew from Trusted people how the military system worked, I think that we could start to get enough public support to get positive movement.
To do this,we too have to find a language and a voice that is jargon free and that can reach the hearts and minds of the people.
We have toi become experts in using social media. We have to tell stories. We have to showcase the heroes. We have to show the malfeasance and the betrayal. We have to find the larger public directly.
A good case will not win. A grand argument will fail. The walls of this Troy will never be taken by a direct intellectual assault. We have to be as crafty as Odysseus.
Timing is everything. The days of ashes and mourning are upon us. The people will want to know what really happened. They are ready to hear the truth now. Let's give it to them.
