Twitter CEO Dick Costolo (@dickc) spoke to Bloomberg TV yesterday, as the social network forges ahead to reach $1 billion is sales revenue by 2014.
Costolo was in an optimistic mood, with Twitter just celebrating its 7th birthday this past week. He was talking big, passionately expressing his desire to reach "every person on the planet."
Laying out his Twitter business philosophy and eager to emphasise a strategy of delivering great user experiences, Costolo said he would build the business without letting fierce competition from other social networks cloud his thinking.
"Our user growth drives everything, as I think about the service and what we are trying to accomplish... its entirely in service to reach every person on the planet," Costolo told "Bloomber West" Journalist Emily Chang.
"All of the benefits of the business and growing the business and extending the platform are derived from that."
On the success of Twitter:
"The idea is to deliver great user experiences and we will figure out how to build the business if we're delivering great user experiences that more people come to."
On Facebook and other competitors:
"We have a a really clear notion of where we want to go with the company and with the product... we don't let other companies decisions affect the way we think about where we are going."
On sending Twitter to go public on Wall Street:
Well, he dodged that questions completely.
"We feel like we are building a global town square," Costolo said.
"Twitter is changing the way people live and the way people communicate and how we interact in real time, in public in a multi directional, unfiltered conversational way. As long as we deliver the capabilities to.. fulfil the global town square, all the other things we want to do as a business will take care of themselves."
And that may be a good thing for Twitter users. Under Costolo, according to this interview, we will always come first and the business will have to find ways to keep us engaged, rather than deplete our user experience in order to keep public investors happy.
On Twitter's 7th Birthday:
"My birthday wish for Twitter is we will look back on seven as- wow, remember when we were only seven and the company was just getting started?"
So, can Twitter completely dominate the global social media space? Can the social network continue to expand and acquire new users in the face of massive competition?
Can Twitter stay true to the user first strategy?
Or will Twitter fade as other networks like Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn (or indeed any new networks) continue to innovate and surpase Twitter?
