I recently wrote about the failure of some high profile wiki projects because the creators of those experiments missed the critical success factor: building a community with a common purpose. Now, a new project is underway that appears to be getting it right, and in a fascinating way. Wired and NewAssignment.net are jointly running Assignment Zero, a project in "pro-am" journalism that founder Jay Rosen describes as, "an attempt to bring journalists together with people in the public who can help cover a story. The "ams" are simply people getting together on their own time to contribute to a project in journalism that for their own reasons they support. The "pros" are journalists guiding and editing the story, setting standards, overseeing fact-checking, and publishing a final version." Wired writes about the first product of this collaboration - an article about the Citizendium encyclopedia from Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger.
