Last week, Loic LeMeur let me have a quick peek at Seesmic. This week, he invited me to test the product and I've been playing with it most of Sunday evening.
For those that don't know - you can imagine Seesmic as Twitter for video. Recording a short clip is really easy - you simply select 'Post a video,' choose the method (Flash upload, YouTube link or record direct) and then follow the instructions. Recording is really simple. Click the big red button in the middle of the screen. When you're done, hit the 'Stop recording' button and voila! If you like what you see then you name and describe the clip and it is instantly available for viewing. What could be simpler?
This is an early release so there are lots of bugs or oddities and Loic is using folk like me to help find the things that are not quite right or which need more work. This is easy in my case as I am really good at breaking applications and getting confused. I am the epitome of Sod's Law.
So far, the product looks pretty slick. I plan to use it in Germany when I visit SAP TechEd and get some of the SAP geeks to play with it as well. Seesmic has an auto post to Twitter feature. This could be very useful for things like live blogging, where Twitter feeds are included in websites. Here's an example of a Tweet that links to a 10 second video I made in iMovie that I subsequently sent to YouTube and then 'recorded' in Seesmic. It's a clumsy way to do things but gives you an idea of the way Seesmic can work for those who prefer to keep their stuff on YouTube.
During a Skype conversation, Loic and I discussed a number of scenarios for this service. One of them might be a sort of CNN style of channel where content produced on Seesmic is edited and subsequently spliced together as virtual news. I really like this idea because it means people from around the world can have a voice. Ben Metcalfe has already said he will make a daily video.
