Courtesy of Dan Farber, I see that TechCrunch has undertaken a comprehensive review of 34 social networking platforms. This followed an earlier review of 9 other platforms. The latest review is based upon a questionnaire sent out to the participating vendors so you have to trust that what they're saying is correct.
I have recently been involved in the selection of Blogtronix so I was particularly keen to see what they had to say for themselves. I'm happy to say the boys at Blogtronix got it right. You can find the details contained in this chart.
I would have been happier to see some real testing along with soliciting the views of users. That would have added much more value because it is in the day to day use of these services and the experience of service support that you get a flavour of what the offering delivers. In this regard, I would have said (as a Blogtronix admin on another site) that while the overall service delivers what it says on the tin, there are a few 'gothyas':
- The lines of communication are not great and you have to know who is the best contact to get things done.
- The admin UI could be better. There's a lot of un-necessary clicking around that could be easily avoided
- Designing the overall look and feel for a Blogtronix site isn't trivial and has to be passed back to Blogtronix for implementation. That lengthens the design process because each change has to be iterated through their design team.
I'm sure these problems will work themselves out over time but right now, they can be irritating.
