Then think about coming to Gran Canaria in Spring 2008. If Luis Suarez pulls it off, then that's where I will be. The event, which is very much in the 'that's a good idea, let's see how to make it happen' stage arose out of a rejected abstract Luis sent to another knowledge management (KM) event in Chicago.
KM is a much maligned term having been mired in some of the worst process blunders I've ever seen. Born out of the idea that information should be readily shared among communities of interest (sound familiar?), KM quickly descended into command and control where information became locked down and very difficult to surface. This was especially true in large enterprises while smaller business had no realistic alternatives.
Today's emerging technologies - blogs and wikis in particular, are giving rise to a new breed of content management which is affordable, usable and valuable as KM tools. It's the kind of technology I am involved in implementing on projects with go live dates in early 2008.
This is especially pertinent to professionals who for years have struggled to find ways of organizing their documents, capture both explicit (say tax law) and implicit (say tax case result/interpretation) information and marshall it in a way that ads value to the practice and ultimately to clients. Recently, VersionOne was a deserved finalist in the AccountancyAge awards for innovation. I think there's a lot more could be done by melding V1 with other services. I also think there's room for MYOB to enjoy increased uptake of its Singleview product but again, this is only a partial solution. I'd really like to see these tools used with other packages to provide a much richer picture that can inform a variety of decisions and processes within professional firms and at all levels.
Hey Luis - I'm up for this. Big time.
ENDNOTE: Luis is an IBM'er - but not like your usual vision of an IBM'er.
