I do not think I need to convince you about the importance of blogging. However, if you are looking for ways to take your blog to the next level, you should entertain the idea of being a guest blogger. Guest blogging is the ultimate win-win situation for bloggers. The guest blogger is able to expand their network. The blog's owner will get a chance to rest while satisfying their readers' desire for content.
Writing a guest post requires some work but the pay off is well worth the effort (I wrote a guest post for Michelle Mangen's blog. She is always sharing great information so be sure to connect with her on Twitter.). In order to guarantee your guest blogging experience is a success, make sure you keep the following tips in mind:
1.) Establish a rapport with the owner of the blog. In my opinion, who you choose to associate with is a reflection of your character. It takes time to build a community so why would you risk destroying it by allowing a stranger to guest post for your blog? Anyone who is interested in being a guest blogger should make sure they are actively participating in the blog owner's community before they seek permission to write a guest post.
2.) Do your homework. If you are an active participant, this step should not be difficult for you. You simply need to adhere to the environment the blog's owner has established. Look for opportunities to add more value to the topic of the blog by sharing your own unique experience and perspective about the topic. Many communities will applaud your efforts to expose them to another point of view.
3.) Write the post. Do not add extra pressure on yourself to be perfect. Pretend like you are writing for your own blog. My routine for writing a guest post is exactly the same as writing for my own blog. I always keep the audience I am trying to reach in mind and frequently ask myself, "How will this information help people?" One thing I caution you not to do is lose your "voice." This is your chance to shine so do not waste it by mimicking someone else's writing style.
4.) Promote the post. The best way to say thank you to the blog's owner (other than writing a fantastic post) is to help them in their efforts to attract attention to their blog. Think. If your friend is gracious enough to allow you to host a party at their house, the least you can do is help them send out invitations. The same principle applies to this situation. Be sure to send out tweets, promote the post on your blog, etc.
5.) Follow up. Just because your post has been published doesn't mean the conversation is overâ€"it's just getting started. You need to be available to respond to comments that may arise from your post. The last thing you want to do is give the impression that you aren't interested in engaging with the people who took time out of their busy schedules to read your post.
Guest blogging is beneficial to everyone involved in the process. The blog's owner can take a break knowing that they are still fulfilling the needs of their community by being willing to share the stage with a guest blogger. The guest blogger is allowed to demonstrate their skills and share viewpoints on the blog that may not have been explored. However, in my mind the real winners are the community because the blog owner has introduced them to another blogger without them having to leave the comfort of their own "home."
Have you considered being a guest blogger? If you have been a guest blogger, what are your tips for guest blogging?
