Facebook has started rolling out a new streamlined design of Timeline for pages. The new design of pages will be more consistent with the re-design of Facebook profiles that happened more than a year ago.
The idea is actually something that was tested for brands a while ago so the overhaul may not come as a surprise to those who have been paying close attention to Facebook's actions. The change doesn't really offer anything new in terms of features. The page information is getting moved into different places but you won't really be offered anything new to play with.
Let's take a look at what changes were made:
1. Single Column Format for Posts
Your entire timeline is now found on the right-hand side column so posts will no longer bounce between the left and right.
2. Left Column For Business Info
The left-hand column will now house all your business details from hours of operation, contact details and the "About" info to the number of page likes, a map (if you use one), friends who like your page and photos and videos.
3. Admin Tool Layout
Previously the admin tool information was displayed in a drop down panel at the top of your page that pushed the rest of your page down. The new streamlined pages has a compact admin navigation at the top including things like Page, Activity, Insights, Settings Build Audience and Help. You will also be able to view this tab no matter where you are on the page.
4. This Week View
On the extreme right you will now be able to see an overview of the number of ads running, page likes and post reach for the current week and the number of unread messages and notifications.
5. Tabs Hidden
Your tabs no longer appear in a box below your cover photo but instead can be found in the drop-down menu for "More".
So what do we think?
Well, most of the changes are purely cosmetic and offer little in the terms of functionality. Your immediate thoughts are probably that the loss of the tabs is going to have a negative effect on your page. While it is true that tabs are useful for creating interest for first time visitors the truth is after that they have very little impact on your page performance.
The truth is by making your posts more prominent on the right hand side - pushing them right below the cover photo- this may actually have a positive effect on your page.
Only if you are creating interesting content, of course.
So what do you think? How will the changes affect your page?
